a recent read:

I love when information helps clarify a point I've been struggling to wrap my brain around. After reading Story Trumps Structure by Steven James, I now know *why* I love intriguing mysteries, don't like gut-wrenching suspense, and run from gross-out horror.

Apparently, mysteries are cerebral and appeal to curiosity, while suspense hinges on fear emotion and horror evokes a visceral response.

And while all three elements are popular within most genres, horror and suspense usually ruin an otherwise good read for me. And now I have words for why!
